System Architecture

System Architects practice the process of defining, specifying, modeling, designing and tracking the development of systems of interconnected machines in a proactive and rational manner. Critical Information Systems operate in life and/or high fiscal impact mission support areas (i.e. flight or vehicle systems, spacecraft control, contamination or other event detection systems). Knowledge of system architecture is a critical knowledge domain that complements the system engineering approach.

Government-procured and military systems have relied on systems engineering principles as a result of lessons learned from complex system development. System failures of critical government systems has led to the condition where development plans and policies and requirements are sometimes over-specified. Programs have typically overreacted to this over-specification by slowing design and development with oversight boards, or by selectively ignoring requirements.

Commercial business market pressures frequently outpace the ability of these organizations to train and apply individuals that can rigorously apply systems engineering principles to projects under development. Failure to apply Systems Architecture in a systematic fashion on projects with more than one developmental organization (e.g. software development and electrical engineering and system test) can lead to a confusing, over budget and under performing development effort.
